LAS VEGAS — On Monday, the federal government spent $2.4 billion to make the first generic drug for erectile dysfunction, Viagra.
The drug, which is produced in China, the Philippines and India, was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) last October, but the approval was delayed because of stiff competition from generic versions.
The drug, made by a biotechnology company called Cipla, was marketed by Sanofi in Europe and has been approved in the U. S., Canada and Japan. The drug's brand was "100 percent Viagra" for its U.
